25+ Years Later
I started my HR career in 1998 at Tyson Foods in Vienna, GA.
I had no idea that 25+ years later, I'd be:
— SVP at a nationally ranked hotel management company
— EVP at a global CPG brand
— Founder of my own firm
— A Florida Supreme Court Certified Mediator
— A graduate from Pepperdine Caruso School of Law
The path wasn't linear. It was INTENTIONAL.
Here are three things I learned from each stop along the way.
1. You are the captain of your own ship.
No one else can chart your path. Not your parents. Not your mentors. Not society's timeline. You get to decide what comes next, and you get to change that decision later if you need to.
2. It's okay to change directions.
Sometimes the path we think we're on isn't the path we're meant to walk. Sometimes we learn more about ourselves by pivoting than by plowing full speed ahead. I spent 30 years saying I was done with school. Then I wasn't. That wasn't a failure of planning; it was growth. It was wisdom.
3. Whatever you do in business or in life, make sure it's something you love.
Not something that looks good on paper. Not something that impresses people at dinner parties. Something that makes you want to show up. Something that matters to you.
We have positioned ourselves to have choices, which is one of the greatest gifts we can give ourselves.
ALWAYS REMEMBER . . . You have the ability to chart your course, to change direction when necessary, and to build a life and career rooted in what you love. That's not a small thing. That's everything!
